LINER NOTES:
Saxophonist, educator Mike Tracy may soon need to staple more pages into his passport. This veteran jazz teacher now has more than 4 decades of experience in classrooms, studios and concert halls, and he’s accumulated more frequent flier miles than many pilots, teaching in schools all over the world. As a Fulbright Senior Specialist, he’s worked with and advised jazz programs in Tallinn, Estonia (2004), the Tbilisi State Conservatoire in Tbilisi, Georgia (2016) and Universidad de las Américas in Quito, Ecuador (2018-19). He’s also got 45 years of experience teaching at the University of Louisville, where he’s Director of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program.
I first saw and met him at the Hermitage in the Garden Jazz Festival in Moscow in 2008, when he was on stage playing with young Muscovites half his age. He was good then, sounds even better today. He’s now got seven CDs to his credit and the one you’re holding in your hand – Fotogragia – is a follow-up to his 2016 Brazilian Jazz release from his group Hora Certa (Right Time).
Brazil and its music have a longtime hold on Tracy’s imagination and this one features music by the cream of Brazil’s best, including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Joao Bosco, as well as two jazz classics done in a Brazilian style.
