I am very pleased to announce the 3rd edition of the LOUISVILLE JAZZ WORKSHOP. The Workshop will build upon the success of our previous editions with:

  • A user friendly, safe environment.
  • Daily morning jam sessions.
  • Master classes specifically designed for participants.
  • Visiting guest artists/educators.
  • Special events focused on the world of jazz.
  • Early evening concerts featuring faculty and guest artists.
  • Extended combo sessions led by an experienced faculty.
  • Evening jam sessions at local restaurants.

Working with you will be a faculty of proven jazz educators/performers who will be joined by master jazz artists, each interacting closely with all participants.  Our staff will be comprised of graduate jazz students who will assist participants and faculty.

As in previous workshops, enrollment will be limited:

  • to ensure everyone’s safety.
  • to promote individual attention.
  • to better balance the combo experience.

To that end the goal is for six groups – thus room for:

  • 6 pianists
  • 6 guitarists
  • 6 bassists
  • 6 drummers
  • 24 to 26 non-rhythm section players.
  • Once the goal of 6 complete rhythm sections is met, we can add one additional group but there will be no more than 7 combos, with no more than 50 to 56 participants.

There will be some changes:

The School of Music at the University of Louisville is closed to all groups all summer due to needed repairs.  I’m very pleased to share that Highland Presbyterian Church will be hosting the Workshop this year.  The church is very active in the arts community, supportive of all styles of music and is welcoming us to use their facilities.  There is ample rehearsal and concert space within one building.  Another plus is that the church is located a very short walk to Bardstown Road, with coffee shops and a variety of restaurants – gourmet to fast-food.  It is also located in a very pleasant, safe neighborhood.

The church is about a 10-minute drive from campus for those staying in the dorms.  There is ample parking at the church, and I am looking into having a shuttle to help transport those staying in the dorm.    We are very fortunate that we can use the space at Highland.  I cannot thank the congregation enough.

Another change will be extending daily combo rehearsal times.  Many have shared that they wanted more playing time and I have been able to adjust the schedule to accommodate this request.   In addition, there will be one day where combo directors will rotate groups, thus giving participants a chance to work with other faculty members.

While expenses have increased, everything has been done to keep the fee affordable and there is a way to attend at last year’s fee.
