The Louisville Jazz Workshops presents JAZZ SESSIONS, a new PROCESS APPROACH to better understanding jazz and improving your performance skills. Designed for an intensive three-day experience, JAZZ SESSIONS will focus on the why and how, examining and explaining topics specifically selected for the participants. Topics you have heard about but never knew why, what to study or how to apply within your own playing. A few suggested topics include:

  • Effective practice strategies
  • Effective warm-up techniques
  • Challenges adult learners face
  • How and what to listen to
  • Using digital patterns
  • Starting a solo, ending a solo
  • How to learn and incorporate ii V7 ideas
  • Memorization suggestions
  • Playing the blues
  • BeBop language
  • Improvising off of a melody
  • How to make a tune your own
  • Ideas from tunes and transcriptions
  • How to use altered dominants
  • How and what to listen to
  • Comping and piano voicings
    and more

In addition to selected topics, JAZZ SESSIONS will focus on four to six predetermined tunes, where participants can be prepared to work on new approaches while honing their skills.  The tunes would be:

  • appropriate for the level of class – accessible but with challenges.
    • determined by the faculty and shared at least two months prior to our meeting, thus enabling you the opportunity to work on each selection.
    • ones that best fit the topics worked on in other classes.
    • ones where you can apply materials being studied in class.
  • at least four tunes would be selected for us all to work on.
    • one would be a blues that we will play in three keys.
    • one would be a ballad.
    • each participant would also select a tune that they would like to work on individually.
  • we will play together in a combo setting, often with the faculty demonstrating.

Like the Louisville Jazz Workshop, Jazz Sessions will have:

  • a faculty of proven jazz educators/performers, each interacting closely with all participants.
  • a user friendly, safe environment.
  • master classes specifically designed for participants.
  • special events focused on the world of jazz.
  • early evening concerts featuring faculty.
  • a combo session.
  • evening jam session at local restaurants.

As in previous workshops, enrollment will be limited. JAZZ SESSIONS will be limited to 15 to 20 students. All instruments and vocalists welcome

HIGHLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. I’m very pleased to share that Highland Presbyterian Church (HPC) will be hosting JAZZ SESSIONS.  The church is very active in the arts community, supportive of all styles of music and is welcoming us to use their facilities.  There is ample rehearsal and concert space within one building.  Another plus is that the church is located a very short walk to Bardstown Road, with coffee shops and a variety of restaurants – gourmet to fast-food.  It is also located in a very pleasant, safe neighborhood. We are very fortunate that we can use the space at HPC.  I cannot thank the congregation enough.
